Onychomycosis (Fungal Nail Infection) Treatment.
Onychomycosis is the most common fungal nail disease, affecting both toe nails and finger nails. Although you perhaps never heard of it, you likely have seen its effects. The most common symptoms include the thickening of the nail, as well as discoloration changing from semi-clear to white or yellow. In extreme cases, the nail can actually break or rot away leaving an embarrassing, unhealthy appearance.
What Causes Onychomycosis?
The usual cause of this disease is a group of fungi called dermatophytes. As with other fungi, dermatophytes thrive and reproduce in areas that contain moisture, such as the feet. Once the fungi find their way to your feet, which can easily happen in public swimming pools, gyms, or showers they reside in and obtain nutrients from your nails.
In extreme cases the fungal infection can cause pain and also promote skin infections.
However, generally the greatest concern is a lack of self-confidence. Prior to the use of cosmetic lasers to remove the fungus, successful treatment required taking medicine for about 2 to 3 months. This is because the fungus embeds within the nail and is difficult to reach. Using new laser technology, however, our spa physicians are able to significantly remove the fungus in a single treatment, and totally eradicate the fungus in as little as two treatments, painlessly.
